"The road is long with many a winding turn that leads us to who knows where, who knows where. But I'm strong, strong enough to carry him.

He ain't heavy. He's my brother.

So on we go. His welfare is my concern.
No burden is he to bear. We'll get there.
For I know he would not encumber me.

He ain't heavy. He's my brother.

If I'm laden at all, I'm laden with sadness that everyone's heart isn't filled with the gladness of love for one another.

It's a long, long road from which there is no return. While we're on the way to there, why not share? And the load doesn't weigh me down at all.

He ain't heavy. He's my brother."

"He Ain't Heavy, He's My Brother" was composed by Bobby Scott and Bob Russell in the late Sixties, having been introduced to each other by band leader Johnny Mercer.

The song  here is as recorded by The Hollies with Sir Elton John on the piano and lead singer Allan Clarke of The Hollies.

The title is thought to have been derived either from a 1924 edition of "Kiwanis" magazine with a column entitled "He Ain't Heavy, He's My Brother" or from Father Flanagan of "Girls and Boy's Town" who used the phrase, which was a caption of a drawing, as the motto of his youth project.

A famous Sixties photograph of an American GI carrying a Vietnamese man on his back to safety also bore the caption: "He ain't heavy, he's my brother."

Saint Christopher, i.e. "Christ Bearer", whose birth name was Offero and who carried people across rivers, is still observed by many churches as the Patron Saint of Travelers and by Ocean Surfers and Internet Surfers alike as Patron Saint of the Sport of Surfing. His Feast Day is July 25th. One day, a small child approached the river and asked Offero to carry him across the waters. The giant-sized Offero began to comply, only to learn that the small boy was far heavier than any other passenger he had taken. The child revealed that he was in fact Jesus Christ, and that his unusual weight was due to the fact that he bore the burdens of the world.
